Fins bench struggling Rosen, turn back to Fitz

The Dolphins went back to Ryan Fitzpatrick as their quarterback after benching Josh Rosen in the fourth quarter of a close game against the Redskins.

The Dolphins benched Josh Rosen for Ryan Fitzpatrick three quarters into Sunday's game against Washington. Earlier this week, Brian Flores said Josh Rosen was "settled" as Dolphins QB and he wanted to see how he improved throughout the season. But offensive struggles appear to have led Flores to change his tune as he looked for a spark. Fitzpatrick led Dolphins to their first second half points of the season via a touchdown drive.

Dolphins down 7-3 to Washington at half. WASH had 92 rushing yards (71 for Adrian Peterson) in first half, winning against Miami's run D. Dolphins need to protect better for Josh Rosen (4 first half sacks) so he has more time to take down-field shots. Rosen has just 50 passing yards and an interception. It's been more of a dink-and-dunk offense featuring Mark Walton.

Dolphins center and offensive captain Daniel Kilgore on the tank brigade rooting for a winless bowl loss: "This team is going to compete their asses off. We're going to go out on Sunday and go to win. As much as I'm sure everybody wants us to lose to secure that No. 1 overall pick, I don't give a damn."

Cameron Wolfe ESPN Staff Writer

Josh Rosen acknowledged that he's aware Dolphins could draft a QB high in 2020 and zap his long-term future in Miami but he's still eager to prove there's not a need to do that: "I feel like I'm trying out for the team. I'm auditioning and trying to put my best foot forward to prove to everyone upstairs, to coach Flo and Mr. Grier that I'm the man moving forward." "It's a different circumstance than what other QBs are put in but it's the one that I've been given. I'm taking it in full stride. I'm excited to hopefully prove over the next 12 more weeks that I'm their guy moving forward."

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

If the Dolphins beat the Redskins on Sunday, Miami still would have a 55% chance to earn the No. 1 overall pick in the draft between all of its 2020 first-round picks, per FPI.
