New York City FC stuns Wayne Rooney and D.C. United

NYCFC pick up 1st win of the season in D.C. (1:31)

NYCFC put an end to their six-game winless streak with a victory against Wayne Rooney and D.C. United. (1:31)

New York City FC entered Sunday's MLS game at D.C. United as one of two teams in the league without a win.

That's not the case any longer as the Bronx club (1-1-5, eight points) came away with the 2-0 triumph over D.C. United to end its winless drought.

D.C. (4-2-2, 14 points) entered the game on top of the Eastern Conference, but the team has gone 1-2-1 in its last four matches.

Leading 1-0 at the half, NYCFC doubled the lead in the 56th minute when Ronald Matarrita chipped through a perfect ball to Heber, who blasted it home from 10 yards out for the 2-0 lead.

The first goal came in the 35th minute. Heber took a ball in the penalty area and played a delicate pass to Alexandru Mitrita. Mitrita hit a left-footed shot from 12 yards out that beat D.C. United goalie Bill Hamid.

NYCFC had a golden chance to take a 2-0 into the break when Anton Tinnerholm was brutally brought down in the penalty area by Leonardo Jara. The foul, accompanied by a yellow card to Jara, gave NYCFC a penalty kick.

Maximiliano Moralez took the penalty but blasted it off the post, keeping it 1-0 at the break.

NYCFC had the run of play through the early part of the game, but it was D.C. United that had the best chance in the first 25 minutes of the game. Luciano Acosta sent a cross into the middle, but Wayne Rooney appeared to jump a little too early and in turn, sent a header over the crossbar from eight yards out.

In the 33rd minute, NYCFC almost broke the 0-0 tie when Heber picked up a misplayed pass in the D.C. back-line and came in on Hamid. He tried to chip it past the D.C. goalie, but Hamid was up to the task and made the save.
