Best bets for Patriots-Jets

For the Week 7 finale, the undefeated Patriots visit the 1-4 Jets in an AFC East clash. Here are our experts' best bets for Monday night.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Projecting the Jets' inactives for tomorrow night: TE Chris Herndon, LT Kelvin Beachum, LG Kelechi Osemele, KR Trenton Cannon, DE Henry Anderson, LB Albert McClellan, LB Neville Hewitt. ANALYSIS: All seven players have injuries, so it's pretty cut-and-dried. The Jets are really thin at ILB; C.J. Mosley's return prevents a full-blown crisis.

Kelechi Osemele mess: 1.) If he received pain killers to play Wks 1-3, why didn't he appear on injury report until Wk 5? Could be a violation of league rules. 2) As vested vet, he collects remaining $5.8M whether he's on IR or not. To recoup money, the Jets would have to start a separate process. No indication that has been initiated. 3.) Fine for conduct detrimental can be max of one week's pay ($580K). Subject to further fines. Listed as "doubtful" this week, strategic designation by Jets.

Highlights from the Jets' 25-player injury report: LB C.J. Mosley practiced the last two days and is expected to play. C Ryan Kalil is a big question because he missed today. The expected offensive line for Monday night (left to right): Chuma Edoga, Alex Lewis, Kalil or Jonotthan Harrison, Brian Winters and Brandon Shell.

Source: Osemele doesn't practice, fined by Jets

Kelechi Osemele, who says he needs shoulder surgery while the Jets say he's fine to play, was fined by the team for missing practice Saturday, a source told ESPN.

Jets RB Le'Veon Bell is looking forward to facing the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots. "It's going to be a fun game and I think we have a really great opportunity to shock the world in a sense," he said. Asked about Sam Darnold's "unstoppable" comment about the offense, Bell said, "I'll ride with my quarterback."

Source: Jets, Osemele in dispute over injury

The Jets are involved in a dispute with former Pro Bowl guard Kelechi Osemele over the extent of Osemele's shoulder injury, and he could be fined for conduct detrimental to the team if he doesn't practice Saturday, a source told ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Jets injury report: Eye on the offensive line. LG Alex Lewis was added to the injury report with a neck injury. C Ryan Kalil hurt his shoulder Thursday. He wasn't expected to practice, per Adam Gase, but did.

Jets G Kelechi Osemele, who hasn't practiced for two weeks due to a shoulder injury, will be fined and/or suspended for conduct detrimental if he doesn't practice tomorrow, a source said. The Jets and Osemele disagree on the severity. A team doctor and an independent doctor cleared him to practice, a source said. Osemele told reporters today that he needs surgery to repair his shoulder.

Jets S Jamal Adams called Monday night a huge game. But then he didn't. Anyway, here's what he said about the Patriots: "We're not gonna get caught up in all the hype, but we understand what's at stake, we understand this is a must-win for us. It's honestly like a playoff game. That's how we're treating it. It's a big game." Adams backtracked a bit, saying, "We're not going to make anything bigger than what it is.." Got it?

Darnold: Jets can be 'unstoppable' with Herndon

Quarterback Sam Darnold said Thursday he thinks the Jets can be "unstoppable as an offense" once tight end Chris Herndon returns from a hamstring injury.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Jets injury report: They listed a season-high 22 players. The top takeaways: As expected, LB C.J. Mosley did not practice, but he expects to go Friday. CB Darryl Roberts is a new addition and did not practice.

QB Sam Darnold has high expectations for the Jets' offense, and all it took was one good game. He said: "Right now, we're just missing Chris (Herndon). Once all the guys are back together, I think we're unstoppable as an offense – or we can be. It's just up to us and how we execute. It's really up to us how many points we score, I think. I think we're capable of so many points." The Patriots might have something to say about that.

Jets LB C.J. Mosley, sidelined since Week 1 with a groin injury, said today he intends to play Monday night against the Patriots. Mosley said he was encouraged by how he did in individual drills and expects to increase his workload tomorrow. This would be huge for the Jets. Coach Adam Gase was cautious, saying earlier Mosley is day-to-day.

Contract note: Steve McLendon's one-year extension has $3.1 million in new money. He received a $652,353 signing bonus. His base salary next season is $1.25 million. ($750,000 is guaranteed for injury; it becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2020 league year). He also gets a $1 million roster bonus on the fifth day. Bottom line: This deal doesn't ensure McLendon, 33, will be on the roster spot next year. It's a good-faith gesture for a team leader — a culture move.

Jets WR Thomas: Short Pats stay 'waste of time'

Jets WR Demaryius Thomas told the New York Daily News that he felt disrespected by the Patriots after being traded to New York when New England needed a roster spot to sign Antonio Brown.

Look who's back: Jets MLB C.J. Mosley (57), who injured his groin in Week 1, is back on the practice field. He's limited to individual drills for now. Coach Adam Gase said they will evaluate him after practice before determining whether to increase his workload.

LT Kelvin Beachum (ankle) has started 37 straight games for the Jets, but that streak could end on Monday night. Beachum isn't practicing today, but they haven't ruled him out yet. Former starting RT Brandon Shell is the logical replacement, but coach Adam Gase was non-committal. The other alternatives are rookie RT Chuma Edoga and recently-acquired Conor McDermott (one career snap at LT).
