Jets rule out ill Bell vs. Dolphins on Sunday

Jets running back Le'Veon Bell, who didn't practice Thursday and Friday after becoming ill, will not play against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Projecting the Jets' inactive players for tomorrow: RB Le'Veon Bell, S Jamal Adams, CB Brian Poole, CB Arthur Maulet, OT Chuma Edoga, S Matthias Farley, S Bennett Jackson. Analysis: This is what the season has come to: The Jets will be without their two most accomplished players, Bell and C.J. Mosley (IR), and very likely their best player, Adams.

The debate has been raging for weeks: Is Adam Gase misusing Le'Veon Bell or is Bell not the same player he was in his Pittsburgh days? Or should we blame the patchwork offensive line? We'll get a chance to see what the Jets look like without Bell because he won't play tomorrow. Bell has been ruled out because of an illness. Make no mistake, the Jets will miss his versatility, pass catching and short-yardage toughness, but Bilal Powell can provide a spark because of his quickness to the hole.

Fear the beard? Jets LB Jordan Jenkins says of Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, "In my opinion, he's having the time of his life. He's playing like he has nothing to lose. He's not worried about getting benched or anything like that. He's just slinging it. He's a high-risk, high-reward passer and right now he's on a hot streak." Fitzpatrick, who carved up the Jets in Week 9, has the fourth-best TotalQBR (68.9) since taking over in Week 7.

Big challenge tomorrow for Jets DC Gregg Williams, who will be without three of his top five DBs (Jamal Adams, Brian Poole and Arthur Maulet). "I just don't say this out of the side of my mouth: Every single player on the defense has to play a minimum of two positions. We have some guys that are playing four positions, Quinnen (Williams) being one of them," he said. Williams said Miami QB Ryan Fitzpatrick "is not a guy you can easily trick."

Jets final injury report: OUT — CB Brian Poole; DOUBTFUL — S Jamal Adams, CB Arthur Maulet; RT Chuma Edoga, S Matthias Farley; QUESTIONABLE— RB Le'Veon Bell. Analysis: Hard to predict Bell because you're dealing with an illness, but my gut says he'll play with the reduced workload. Look for more Bilal Powell and Ty Montgomery.

Le'Veon Bell‘s status for Sunday's game against the Dolphins is up in the air after he missed his second straight day of practice due to an illness. Coach Adam Gase said he won't know until tomorrow if Bell can play. This has been a disappointing year for Bell, whose future is uncertain. He appeared frustrated that he got the ball only 10 times in last week's loss. Meanwhile, Jamal Adams (ankle) missed his third day of practice, but still hasn't been ruled out.

Ryan Griffin's three-year extension, just submitted to the league, is a $9.6M deal. It includes $4.3M in fully guaranteed money. It really kicks in next year, when he will make a total of $3.9M — $1.16M base, 1.5M option bonus, $918K roster bonus (5th day of league year) and $300K in per-game roster bonuses. All guaranteed. In 2021, $450K of his $2.4M base is fully guaranteed. Cap numbers: $2.9M, $3.3M and $3.4M. In reality, it's a two-year, $6.7M deal.

Robby Anderson was pragmatic when asked about free agency, saying, "It'll work itself out." It was a stark contrast to his post-trading deadline giddiness about staying with the Jets. He doesn't think his low stats will hurt his stock, saying he considers himself a top-5 WR: "Yeah, of course. I believe I am that. I know the work I put in and I know what I'm capable of doing." When he gets targets, "I put up those numbers that ... top WRs do." He said that's not a criticism of his role.

Key notes from Jets injury report: DID NOT PRACTICE — RB Le'Veon Bell (illness), S Jamal Adams (ankle), RT Chuma Edoga (knee), CB Arthur Maulet (calf), CB Brian Poole (concussion). LIMITED — TE Ryan Griffin (illness), CB Maurice Canady (illness/quad). Analysis: Griffin and Canady returned to practice. Not looking good for Adams, Edoga, Maulet and Poole.

Jamal Adams' anticipated absence "changes everything for the entire secondary," coach Adam Gase said. Don't forget, CB Arthur Maulet (calf) and nickel back Brian Poole (concussion) also aren't expected to play. Darryl Roberts could replace Adams at safety; he played some safety last season. It probably will be Roberts and Marcus Maye at safety, with Bless Austin, Maurice Canady and Nate Hairston at corner. Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick hasn't been this happy since he squeezed the Jets for $12M.

Jets injury report: DID NOT PRACTICE — S Jamal Adams (ankle), RT Chuma Edoga (knee), CB Brian Poole (concussion), CB Arthur Maulet (calf), TE Ryan Griffin (illness) and CB Maurice Canady (illness/quad). Analysis: Adams not expected to play. Wouldn't be surprised if he misses multiple games. With Maulet and Poole also unlikely to play, the patchwork secondary will be even more patchworked. (Is that a word?) Look for CB Nate Hairston to be summoned from the witness protection program.

From all indications, Jamal Adams (sprained ankle) won't play Sunday against the Dolphins. He said, "I'm not going to get out there until I'm myself. I don't know when that is. We're not going to put a timetable on it." It's not a high-ankle sprain, per Adam Gase.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

LB C.J. Mosley (groin) is having surgery "sooner than later," per Adam Gase, who said he didn't know the exact date. The hope is that he will be back for the offseason program in April. Gase was evasive on the timetable, but seemed optimistic about a spring return.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

In the preseason, Adam Gase predicted "meaningful" games in December. Didn't happen: "Nobody is more disappointed than we are. Things didn't work out for us this year. We couldn't get things rolling in the right direction. You lose your QB for three games, it set us back. We couldn't keep a core group of guys healthy long enough to really gain that chemistry. We just have to find a way to keep getting better these last four games."

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

The Jets likely will be without three of their top five DBs on Sunday — S Jamal Adams (ankle), slot CB Brian Poole (concussion) and CB Arthur Maulet (calf). What a mess. The lineup vs. Miami could be: Bless Austin, Maurice Canady and Darryl Roberts (slot) at corner, with Marcus Maye and Blake Countess/Bennett Jackson at safety. CB Nate Hairston appears to be the forgotten man.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

C.J. Mosley's inevitable trip to IR triggers a few thoughts: By having groin surgery now, he can return for the off-season program, per Adam Gase. Football is so unpredictable. In Baltimore, Mosley was a durable player (he missed three games in five years), but his first season with the Jets essentially ended in the first game. It's a cautionary tale about free agency. The Jets gave him a five-year, $85M contract, including $19M this year. Ouch. It's a risky game, free agency.
