All-Star guard Kemba Walker, who had 43 points in Wednesday's finale against Orlando, has no idea if he has played his last game for the Hornets. Coach James Borrego didn't sound like he planned to let Walker get away in free agency. “I love that kid,'' he said. “He inspires me. I love coaching him, and I look forward to coaching him for many years to come.''

Pistons secure final East berth; Hornets miss out

Even without Blake Griffin, the Pistons were able to secure the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday with a win over the Knicks. The Hornets, needing a win and a Pistons loss to get in, fell to Orlando.

It's official.Hornets eliminated from playoff contention as the Pistons rout the Knicks 115-89. Big question for Charlotte is whether this is guard Kemba Walker's last game in a Hornets' uniform. Walker is showing why he'll be a hot commodity in free agency with 43 points with two minutes remaining. He surpassed 12,000 career points tonight. Big decisions ahead.

The crowd at the Spectrum Center started chanting "MVP! MVP!'' as Hornets guard Kemba Walker made two free throws to give him 39 points and cut the Orlando lead to two with 8:25 remaining. Barring a rally in Charlotte and collapse by the Pistons in New York the playoffs won't have Walker.

Unless they surrender a 35-point lead in the final 9 minutes, the Pistons will secure the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference and will face the Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs. Charlotte will finish ninth in the conference.

Kemba Walker is doing his part with 28 points in less than three full quarters. But the Hornets are down by seven and the Pistons are . . . well, making this race for the last playoff spot in the East a runaway. Up more than 30 on the Knicks. Can you say anti-climatic?

Detroit is holding New York to 39 percent shooting in the first half - including 3-for-13 from beyond the arc - and leads by 24. Barring a major collapse in the second half, the Pistons will secure a playoff berth and eliminate Charlotte from the playoffs.

The updates from around the NBA that were shown on the scoreboards in the corner of the Spectrum Center have been replaced by stats for the starters between the Hornets and Magic. Guessing there was no need to constantly remind the Pistons are blowing out the Knicks 60-34, making what the Hornets are doing inconsequential. And the Hornets aren't much since a 20-6 Orlando run. Down 53-44.

With Blake Griffin out, Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson have carried the Pistons. They've combined for 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting to help Detroit build a 19-point lead midway through the second quarter. A Detroit win cliches a playoff berth and keeps Charlotte out of the postseason.

Orlando's Terrence Ross is doing his part to spoil the Hornets' playoff push. He's 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line for 11 points as the Magic lead 30-25 after one quarter.

The Hornets started fast, making 7 of their first 12 field goal attempts, but have made only one of their last four shots to allow Orlando to climb within 20-18. Meanwhile, the Pistons are up 12 over the New York Knicks. Not much of a buzz at The Spectrum Center -- yet.

There's a long way to go here in New York, but Detroit looks sharp early. They're up by 15 points just eight minutes into the game. A Detroit win clinches a playoff berth and keeps Charlotte out of the playoffs.

The Charlotte Hornets have won four straight and eight of their last 11 games to get in position to make the playoffs, but need a win tonight over Orlando and a Detroit loss to the New York Knicks to slip in as the eighth seed. “We just have not given in,'' Hornets coach James Borrego said prior to the regular season-finale at the Spectrum Center. “We could have easily given in 12, 15 games ago. A lot of people wrote us off. We just haven't given in. The resiliency is there. The toughness is there.''
