Sources: Anderson ban is for epithet, not bat flip

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson's one-game suspension following a benches-clearing incident was for his use of the N-word during the on-field confrontation, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Baseball has handed out suspensions related the Royals-White Sox incident on Wednesday. Kansas City pitcher Brad Keller gets five games, or one start, for throwing at Tim Anderson. Chicago manager Rick Renteria also gets a game, and admittedly he was pretty heated during the scrum. But Anderson got a game, too, for "his conduct after the benches cleared." That conduct must have been verbal because there was nothing visual to merit Anderson's ejection, much less a suspension and the fine that goes with it. With no more concrete evidence that what we have -- ie, what was said that umpire Joe West found so disruptive -- I'm going to chalk this one up in the what-the-heck column.

Fiercely energetic Tim Anderson spiked his bat to celebrate a home run and Kansas City's Brad Keller responded by drilling him with a fastball, setting off a benches-clearing fracas in the Royals' 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox on...

The White Sox say Yoan Moncada was removed from today's game for precautionary reasons and tested negative for a concussion. Moncada was hit in the helmet by a throw while stealing a base in the fifth inning.

Chicago's Daniel Palka just singled off Royals reliever Ian Kennedy for his first hit of the season. Palka was 0 for 32 this season and 0 for 34 dating to last year. Palka was pinch-hitting for Yoan Moncada, who was hit in the head while stealing a base in the fifth. Moncada remained in the game initially and there has been no announcement made regarding why he was removed.

Best part of the Royals-White Sox incident was when heated Royals coach Dale Sveum had to be held back by ChiSox manager Rick Renteria. It was a battle royale of deposed Cubs managers. Renteria and Sveum both ended up on the ejection list, along with Tim Anderson and Brad Keller.

It's been a wild afternoon for the Royals and White Sox. Chicago SS Tim Anderson threw his bat after an early homer. K.C. starter Brad Keller hit him. Benches cleared. And managers Ned Yost and Rick Renteria got into it before things settled down.

Standard issue benches-clear incident between Royals and White Sox after Tim Anderson is hit by a Brad Keller pitch. Anderson homered and tossed his bat in previous at-bat. Things got pretty hot between Rick Renteria and some of Ned Yost's staff.

The White Sox say Lucas Giolito was removed from today's game because of left hamstring tightness. He is listed as day-to-day.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito was cruising early against the Royals but he grabbed at his right hamstring while delivering a pitch to Alex Gordon. After throwing a couple of warmup pitches, Giolito was pulled from the game. He'd struck out five without allowing a hit over 2 2/3 innings. Ryan Burr is on for Chicago.
