Cubs keep rolling, crush Pirates 14-3

Addison Russell set a career high with four hits, Jason Heyward homered for the third time in four games and drove in four runs as the Chicago Cubs drubbed the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-3 Monday.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

The Cubs beat the Pirates 14-3 on Monday as they jumped on starter Chad Kuhl for nine runs in the first two innings. Jason Heyward hit his third home run in his last four games while Addison Russell earned his first 4 hit day with four singles. The Cubs have scored 53 runs over their last 6 games while Brett Anderson was just good enough to give them a quality start, the team's first in over week.

Staked with a huge lead Cubs starter Brett Anderson threw the first quality start for the team since a week ago Sunday, Anderson went 6 innings giving up just one earned run on 5 hits and 6 walks. It wasn't always pretty but he's in line for the win as the Cubs lead 12-3 in the seventh.

Jason Heyward just hit his 3rd home run of the season in his 18th game after taking 49 games last year to hit 3. That came on June 6. He's slugging .477 now; he never got above .400 last season.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

As a sinker/slider guy, Pirates starter Chad Kuhl has a large platoon split so far in his brief major league career. Working carefully, he walked lefties Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist with two outs and paid the price as Addison Russell knocked in Rizzo with a base hit and then lefty-swinging Jason Heyward popped a three-run homer.

Joe Maddon says he's starting Kyle Schwarber in left field instead of the smaller right field at PNC Park because he doesn't believe they can predict much difference in where fly balls will go tonight and Schwarber is simply more used to left. He did start in right field here for the wild card game in 2015.

Cubs gather to warm up but it's raining so BP might be canceled in Pittsburgh.
