What you need to know about Friday's Sweet 16 games

Whose freshman will star: Kentucky's or UCLA's? How can Butler stay with UNC? Can South Carolina disrupt Baylor? What's the key matchup for Wisconsin vs. Florida? It's time for answers.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Villanova and Duke were "supposed" to be here at Madison Square Garden. Absent those two teams with big New York fan bases, not exactly packed at the open practices.

Scott Drew on the unlikely regional here in NY, with Baylor, South Carolina, Florida and Wisconsin talked about the parity of the game with transfers and one and dones. He then added, "with the NCAA Tournament, its who plays best in those 40 minutes. It's not best four of seven, the best team doesn't always win."

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Ishmail Wainwright said Baylor watched three hours of film on Sindarius Thornwell alone and that the "whole team" will have to defend him.

Coley Harvey ESPN Staff Writer

The NCAA's East Regional has (unofficially) begun at Madison Square Garden. South Carolina's Frank Martin opens Thursday's news conferences. "I'm proud of my colleagues (in the SEC)," Martin said of the conference having three remaining teams, including two here with the Gamecocks and Gators. Martin added that it bothered him when critics downplay the SEC's successes.

FiveThirtyEight: Gamecocks aren't done yet

According to FiveThirtyEight's round-by-round probabilities, South Carolina has a puncher's chance of knocking off Baylor on Friday night. If the Gamecocks move on, however, they'll be longshots the rest of the way.

Bilastrator: Carolina D rising to the occasion

Frank Martin and the Gamecocks showed last weekend how elite they are in the defensive end. But to get through this weekend, they'll have to be good on offense, too.

Known much more for football, the SEC is changing perceptions of its basketball brand with the success of Florida and South Carolina. That could continue in the Sweet 16.

Assessing Sweet 16 coaches: Frank Martin

Martin has orchestrated a defensive scheme that works well for the Gamecocks. But unless South Carolina turned a corner in its landmark upset of Duke, its offense still has room to improve.
