WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Kyle Zunic drained two straight treys in the final minutes as Winthrop pulled away to win its first game of the season, a 67-57 victory over Hartford on Thursday night.
The Eagles were up 34-28 at the break. Hartford took a 40-38 lead when P.J. Henry hit a jumper with 13:48 remaining. The teams swapped the lead until Chase Claxton slammed home a dunk to give Winthrop a 46-45 lead at the midway point.
Hartford closed to 56-55 with 3:33 remaining after the Hawks made three straight free throws before Zunic nailed his 3-pointers.
Winthrop matches up against Fresno State on the road on Sunday. Hartford matches up against Marist on the road on Tuesday.
