G2 fly high over Cloud9 at the League of Legends World Championship

G2 Esports moved to the top of the Group A standings with a victory Monday in the League of Legends World Championship.

The event features 16 teams divided into four groups for a double round robin of best-of-one matches. The top two teams in each group will advance to the best-of-five quarterfinals, which run Oct. 25-27. The best-of-five semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 2-3, with the best-of-five final to be held Nov. 10.

The championship team will receive 37.5 percent of the prize pool, set at a minimum of $2,225,000. The runner-up will get 13.5 percent of the prize pool.

In Group A action Monday, G2 defeated Cloud9 to move to 2-0. Griffin topped Hong Kong Attitude to improve to 1-1, level with Cloud9, with Hong Kong Attitude last in the group at 0-2.

Every team in Group B owns a 1-1 record after FunPlus Phoenix beat Splyce and GAM Esports defeated J Team.

In Group D, Invictus Gaming took their first loss to drop into a three-way tie for first at 2-1. DAMWON Gaming, who knocked off Invictus, and Team Liquid, who got past ahq e-Sports Club, are also 2-1, with ahq at 0-3.

Group C was idle Monday.
