Former heavyweight world title challenger Carlos Takam, 38, of France, has signed a promotional contract with Star Boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia, multiple sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN on Monday. Takam was supposed to be the opponent for former undisputed cruiserweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut on May 25 until Usyk suffered a torn right biceps that forced the fight to be called off. Usyk is slated to return from the injury on Oct. 12 in Chicago, according to Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who anticipated that Takam would still be the opponent. However, with Takam signing with DeGuardia it remains to be seen if that fight will still take place or if Usyk will need a new opponent.
