New Texas Tech coach Matt Wells has added five new on-field coaches who worked with him at Utah State: Jovon Bouknight (outside receivers), Julius Brown (defensive backs), Steve Farmer (offensive line), DeAndre Smith (running backs) and Luke Wells (tight ends/inside receivers). Wells already announced offensive coordinator David Yost and defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will be moving with him to Texas Tech. Luke Wells, Matt's brother, is an elite-level recruiter in the Dallas area.

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt faces an interesting coaching decision with Kliff Kingsbury's successor. He could once again go young/offense with coaches like North Texas' Seth Littrell or Troy's Neal Brown, or he could go defense/veteran with someone like Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables or Oregon defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, both of whom go back to Hocutt's Kansas State days. Utah State's Matt Wells also could be an option here.
