Virginia Tech flipped ESPN 300 offensive lineman Doug Nester from Ohio State on Tuesday and made it official on Wednesday. The Hokies were able to pull the No. 72 ranked recruit away from the Buckeyes as Nester had been looking at other programs since Urban Meyer announced his retirement. The West Virginia prospect had been considering Penn State as well as Virginia Tech and is now officially signed with the Hokies.
QB Hendon Hooker, who has spent his career at Virginia Tech as a backup, said he'll enter the NCAA transfer portal, leaving the Hokies thin at the position heading into spring.
Virginia Tech QB Josh Jackson, who missed most of last season with a leg injury, and RB Deshawn McClease announced Wednesday that they will transfer.

Sources: Alabama is expected to hire Virginia Tech wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins for the same position. Wiggins also had been in the mix for a coordinator role at Temple. I'm hearing Virginia Tech could target Jafar Williams, most recently Maryland's running backs coach, as Wiggins' replacement. Wiggins has coached receivers on Justin Fuente's staffs at both Virginia Tech and Memphis.
Clemson -- surprise! -- is the head of the class in the ACC, with many teams facing an offeason of transition.
Virginia Tech is backing out of three games against East Carolina, announcing that it is replacing September's scrubbed game and pulling out of scheduled games against the Pirates in 2023 and 2025.
The SEC has busted the curve at the midterm point with three teams earning A-plus grades.
Bowl season kicks off today with six games, with Fresno State's prolific QB Marcus McMaryion defeating Herm Edwards' Arizona State Sun Devils early on.

Here's former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer on Urban Meyer's retirement. Beamer today is ending the College Football Hall of Fame. "I was surprised when I heard it, but you know, it's a tough business and every day is a challenge. I think he's done a great job. I'm a fan of his, I really think he's a good coach, but he's got to do what's right for his family and for his health. So I wish him nothing but the best."
From Dec. 15 through Jan. 7, the Celebration Bowl through the CFP National Championship, Adam Rittenberg picks his winners for bowl season.
