The classes are full, and the grades are out. Alabama, Ohio State and Texas impressed and earned the only three A-plus marks.
Cal announced former Louisville defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon has joined the program as the associate head coach for defense and inside linebackers coach.
Arizona's coaching search seems to be entering the home stretch. Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin and former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin are in the mix, but Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is emerging as another strong candidate to watch. Niumatalolo is 84-48 in 10 seasons at Navy.
Two names I'm hearing are in the mix for Arizona's coaching vacancy: Troy head coach Neal Brown and Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin, the former head coach at Eastern Washington. Brown is 25-13 at Troy, while Baldwin just completed his first season on the Cal staff.
The first early signing period is in the books. With almost seven weeks until national signing day, some grades are incomplete, but here's how teams have fared.
Former Cal quarterback Max Gilliam announced he will transfer to UNLV. Gilliam redshirted during his only season in Berkeley and transferred to Saddleback Junior College after coming out of spring ball at No. 3 on the depth chart. He will compete at UNLV with Armani Rogers, who started nine games as a redshirt freshman this season and was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year. At one time, both Rogers and Gilliam were both committed to Cal.
The Trojans find themselves back on top, and several other teams are going bowling. How does the conference stack up?
There won't be playoff implications on the line when Stanford and USC meet Friday night, but there's still the matter of bowl destinations for both.
J.J. Molson hit a 37-yard field goal with four seconds left after backup quarterback Devon Modster led a clutch scoring drive, and UCLA secured bowl eligibility under interim coach Jedd Fisch with a 30-27 victory over California on Friday night.
There is only one bowl with representatives scheduled to be in attendance at tonight's Cal-UCLA game: the Walk-On's Independence Bowl. It's December 27, in Shreveport, La.
The Trojans are good -- not great, but they're still the best the Pac-12 has to offer this season. Where does everyone else rank with one week to go?
Re the clock-killing drive: Shaw said, "If we were going to score, it was going to be a touchdown. I wasn't going to kick a field goal. Otherwise, we back them up and make them go the length of the field."
Hobbled Stanford star Bryce Love finished with 101 yards, thanks to a 57-yard TD in the 3rd quarter, & didn't appear on the 14-play drive in which the Card killed the last 7:25 to win. "To outrun the whole defense on 1 1/2 ankles was unbelievable," Coach David Shaw said.
David Shaw won his 72nd game at Stanford, moving past Pop Warner into 1st alltime on the Farm. Shaw thanked his family, called the record "awesome," & let on he remembers the doubts of fans & media after his 20 losses. Shaw: "The bandwagon was completely empty & our guys fight back."
As a freshman, Harrison Phillips watched his senior teammates parade The Axe at Cal & dreamt of getting his chance. Three years later, the Stanford captain seized his opportunity. And? "It was heavy! It was a lot heavier than I expected." Still, Phillips said, "One of my favorite memories here so far." And for the rest of his life.
Bryce Love rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown despite missing most of the fourth quarter after aggravating an ankle injury, and No. 20 Stanford held off California 17-14 on Saturday to keep its Pac-12 title hopes alive.
Bryce Love broke out on Stanford's 1st possession of the 2nd half, taking it 57 yards for a TD out of the Cardinal's jumbo, 22-in-the-box formation. Great blocks from fullback Daniel Marx and pulling guard Nate Herbig sprung him.
Best RB at Stanford Stadium in 1st half has been Cal junior Patrick Laird, w/ 12 carries for 83 yards. Bryce Love (6 carries for 17 yards) has been in & out of lineup & didn't play on Stanford's last possession of half.
