First 2018 class rankings: Clemson

Despite a group expected to be small in numbers, the Tigers are a lock for a fourth-straight top-10 class. Five-star DE Xavier Thomas was a huge early-April win.

Kiper's favorite 2017 prospects: Carlos Watkins

If Deshaun Watson was the most entertaining player on the Tigers' offense, Watkins gets that nod on defense. He may not go in the first round, but the talent is there.

The highest rated SEC commit is Cade Mays at No. 18. Clemson, meanwhile, has commitments from two of the top three players in the country and Penn State has three commits ranked in the top 17.

Clemson probably won't be able to take a large class this year, but the Tigers are off to a fantastic start. Clemson has a commitment from defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 1-ranked player in the ESPN 300, as well as quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the third-ranked player in the country. In total, the Tigers have six ESPN 300 commits and are currently ranked as the fourth-best class in the class rankings.

For the third time in 12 years, the nation's No. 1 player hails from South Carolina. Defensive end Xavier Thomas, who is originally from Florence, S.C., but will play his senior season at IMG Academy, joins defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney (2011) and Da'Quan Bowers (2008) as the only players from the Palmetto State to hold the top spot in the ESPN 300. It's rare for a state like South Carolina to produce the nation's top overall player, but it's even rarer that all three were defensive ends. Just like Bowers, Thomas will head to Clemson.

Williams, who was vying for playing time at tight end with Milan Richard and several others this spring, hurt his knee during practice earlier this month and had surgery last week.
