Forget style points; Week 4 was all about survival

Sam Darnold's downfield passing. Oklahoma's pass defense. Michigan's offense. It wasn't pretty for several top-10 teams. How worried should they be about their Week 4 performances?

No, people, that was not Penn State coach James Franklin Saturday morning on College GameDay, responding to critics that he ran up the score against Georgia State last week. "I got about 100 nasty messages from people that thought that was me," Franklin said after his team beat Iowa. It was actually comedian Keegan Michael-Key, impersonating the coach. "It's somewhat ridiculous that I have to say that," said Franklin, who knows Key and described the PSU grad as "an awesome guy."

College Football Playoff picks after Week 4

Oklahoma State fell to TCU, and Penn State just survived against Iowa. One team that had no such trouble was Alabama, which solidified its grasp on the top spot, according to our experts.

Penn State wins thriller on walk-off TD (2:04)

Penn State coach James Franklin said he was approached by multiple players on Friday night about wearing Torrence Brown's jersey No. 19. Franklin picked fellow DE Shareef Miller, who responded with a big game that included a safety in the Nittany Lions' 21-19 win over Iowa. Brown, out with a knee injury suffered last week, will be awarded the game ball from this victory, Franklin said.

I rode the elevator from the press box to the Kinnick concourse with Penn State coaches, whose faces showed a mix of shock and respect for Iowa. I don't think the feeling of victory had set in yet. They were incredibly quiet, considering what had just happened. Of course, when they exited the elevator and got on golf carts for a ride to the locker room as Iowa fans screamed unpleasant things, reality likely hit them square.

Franklin and Barkley excited after thrilling last-second win (2:25)

Penn State ran 99 plays, gained 571 yards, & needed walk-off TD pass scored to beat Iowa, 21-19. Nittany Lions dominated but nearly lost. Don't see that every Saturday. A lot to like about both teams.

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

Penn State's James Franklin and Joe Moorhead raved about Juwan Johnson in the offseason, saying he would help fill the void left by Chris Godwin and others in the passing game. Johnson's length is his best attribute. What a moment for his first career touchdown, and an even bigger moment for QB Trace McSorley as the Nittany Lions survive.

Touchdown Iowa. Akrum Wadley runs untouched for 35 yards. Iowa leads No. 4 Penn State 19-15 with 1:42 to play. It must go for two. Did the Hawkeyes score too soon? We'll see.

Saquon Barkley gets up slowly after jumping to a stop near the sideline, and Penn State's collective heart skips a beat. He appears to be OK but momentarily leaves the game at Iowa.

Michele Steele ESPN Reporter

Asked James Franklin about Saquon Barkley before the season: "He's going to do great things on the field this year. Saquon is a guy who's going to do special things the rest of his life."

Oh, Iowa, how are you doing this? The Hawkeyes have just been hanging around. And suddenly, they're down two in the fourth quarter. Dangerous times for Penn State.
